In 2002 New Directions issued a request for proposals on interdisciplinary environmental topics tied to the theme of water. Receiving 30 proposals, New Directions selected 6 teams, each consisting of at least one humanist and one physical scientist. Teams were funded at $10,000 each, contingent on 1:1 matching, for a total of $20,000 per team.

Teams worked on their projects through 2003 and 2004. Results are available at outcomes and at case studies.
