The New Directions BioSphere2 Workshop
Summary of Results
The first New Directions Workshop took place at Biosphere2 north of Tucson, AZ, on March 22-24, 2002. The workshop was an initial opportunity for
- the ND case study teams to introduce their science-humanities projects,
- to begin a common exploration of science-humanities interactions, and
- to become acquainted with the kinds of resources in interdisciplinary scholarship and public outreach that they will need in order to be successful.
Day 1
Day One was devoted to team self-introductions and an introduction to Biosphere2 itself (by Tony Burgess, professor of Education at BioSphere2) as a case study in science-humanities interdisciplinarity. In the team self-introductions, each team outlined the goals and challenges and provided a provisional timeline for deliverables.
Day 2
Day Two focused on extended discussion of
- the role of science policy decision making (with Susan Avery, Director of CIRES, University of Colorado, and Victor Baker, Hydrology, Univ. of Arizona),
- interdisciplinary resources (with Julie Thompson Klein, of Wayne State University, and Fran Lightsom, of the US Geological Survey),
- possibilities for more graphic public outreach (Chris Desser, consultant to the Funders' Working Group on Biotechnology and Shane Lunny, CEO of Lunny Communications, including a trip to the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum), and
- the needs of public science (Chuck Hutchison, NASA).
Day Two also continued the discussion of Biosphere2 as a case study in science-humanities interdisciplinarity with a presentation by Chris Bannon, VP of Operations at Biosphere2.
Day 3
On Day Three, all participants were broken out in four working groups (not by teams) in order to ask key questions about how best to proceed. The strongest recommendations to come from these working groups was for:
- greater involvement of stakeholders groups and private industry in NDI,
- the need to refashion the ND conference along the lines of an event, festival, or "happening,"
- to have members of the steering committee visit each of the teams on-site, and
- to seek further funding opportunities in support of NDI.
